In the bustling world of board gaming, a fresh entrant has sauntered into the limelight, offering a delightful concoction of competition and confectionery. Sweet Mess, a light to light-medium weight game from Pika Games, marries the whimsy of a dessert kitchen with the thrill of a race against time. Designed for 1–4 players, this game is an ode to every dessert lover with a penchant for a little friendly competition.

As you unbox Sweet Mess, the first thing that strikes you is the effervescent artistry and high-quality components that beckon you into a kaleidoscopic realm of dessert-making. The bowl tiles, ingredient tokens, player boards, and cards are more than mere game pieces; they are your utensils and ingredients in this sweet skirmish. As you dive into the gameplay, you’re no longer merely a player; you are a patissier vying for the coveted title of the dessert maestro.

The essence of Sweet Mess is akin to a televised cooking competition where every grab of an ingredient, every whisk of a tool, and every strategic store of ingredients is a step closer to crafting the perfect cake, pie, or other sweet delights. The thematic resonance here is palpable, making the gameplay not just engaging but experiential.

The race is on as players vie for at least three “awards,” which trigger the end game. This clever mechanic ensures that there’s no room for dilly-dallying; over-agonizing on getting that perfect mix of ingredients can cost you the game. It’s a sweet mess, yes, but a mess that demands swift, tactical decisions.

One of the delights of Sweet Mess is its pace. Whether you’re playing a 2-player skirmish or a 4-player face-off, the game briskly moves from one round to the next, keeping everyone on their toes. With an average playtime between 30–60 minutes, it’s a delightful pick for a game night.

The tactical nature of Sweet Mess is its pièce de résistance. Unlike games that demand a long-term strategy, here, players are rewarded for making the most out of the present scenario. It’s about seizing the opportunities as they come, sometimes those inadvertently crafted by your opponents.

However, Sweet Mess might not satiate the appetite of players hankering for a long, heavyweight game. The whimsical art and light-hearted competition might not resonate with those seeking a serious, strategic endeavor. The game’s emphasis on tactical maneuvers over long-term planning may not sit well with every gaming palate.

As a seasoned board gamer, I found Sweet Mess to be a refreshing change from my usual heavy game repertoire. Awarding it a score of 8/10, it’s replaced another cherished light game, Wild Serengeti, in my collection. The ease of teaching and getting it to the table made Sweet Mess a hit, especially among the casual players in my local group.

I was able to come across a review copy and I’ve played Sweet Mess SOLO, two player, and three player, and I wanted to mention that the solo game is really worth it. It’s not one of those lame “beat your own score” variants. The AI opponent has its own player board, action deck, and other components to make for a unique experience. It doesn’t feel like you are playing against another player; in fact, it feels like you are playing a gainst a robot chef!

You can set this up in 10 minutes, and knock out a SOLO session in another 30 minutes! I really think this is a nice one when you don’t want to spend an hour setting up and 2 hours playing a SOLO game.

In conclusion, Sweet Mess by Pika Games is not just a game but an invitation to a delightful, competitive dessert-making adventure. Its beautiful artwork, quick pace, and tactical gameplay make it a sweet addition to any board game collection.
