Rock, Paper, Scissors FINALLY Deluxified
I probably don’t have to tell you but one of the most iconic games in history is finally getting the deluxified treatment!
The classic game of strategy and next-level thinking is getting pampered on Kickstarter as we speak. Do you remember as a kid having to play with your old, cheap version on RPS? Or even having to play with your hands? It’s hard to believe it’s taken till 2021 for this idea to make it to crowdfunding but it appears to have been worth the wait!
The Dragon’s Tomb and Jeff Kornberg bring this new offering to the table through Kickstarter and they are pulling out all of the stops! The base game will come with a natural, raw amethyst geode, European embroidery scissors, and metallic, gold performance paper as the main game components.
I’ve always wanted to take my RPS experience to the next level and these new premium components are really going to add theme and depth to the play experience. No longer do I need to imagine my weapon of choice or make crude hand gestures.
The art has been done by the fabulous Beth Sobel (of Wingspan, Calico, and Viticulture fame). The lore was developed by Chip Theory Games (Too Many Bones, Cloudspire). Here is a sample below.
It’s better than I could have hoped for. I believe the depth of the story is really going to drive home the theme of this play experience.
Gametrayz is producing a custom game tray to make set-up and clean-up less of a chore which means RPS will hit the table more often and can be played in less time.
If that wasn’t enough Dávid Turczi has created a “solo” mode that early reviewers are giving high praise! If it’s anything like the solo mode for Kanban EV then I’m going to be a happy gamer. I’m a huge fan of Turczi’s previous solo designs.
As others have said, this new take on RPS is likely to lead players to experience the game in a whole new way. As a typical scissors player, I agree with board game reviewer Naveen (from Before You Play) that this new edition has got me interested to explore the other factions. I’m especially excited to test out new strategies with paper which might actually be a tad too strong with the metallic gold material. It always beats rock and there seems to be no way of getting around that.
As far as pledge levels go I would recommend the base $29 level as that’s where you’ll get the most value and likely the best chance to resell on the secondary market if this is a bit “too much game” for you.
I fully expect this version of one of the all-time greats to make it to the table often and I’d be surprised if the solo mode didn’t quickly become a reason in itself to back this project. No one wants to continue to play two-handed.
