ISS Vanguard — The Story Ex Fortitudine Veritas
Greetings, fellow board gamers!
I hope this winter is treating you all very well. When the weather gets cold we all have a perfect excuse to get more games to the table. Even though the ISS Vanguard release is off somewhere beyond the horizon, we can enjoy our other favorites until that glorious day arrives!
Apparently there’s a good number of ISS-V fans who know little about the game’s backstory. That’s a shame because it is fascinating. I hope this article reaches those that might not be familiar with ISS Vanguard, or backers that just hadn’t seen the lore yet. The story provides a great entry into what this game is all about.

Science Fiction sometimes doesn’t provide much backstory. It’s common for Sci-Fi novels, television shows, and movies to throw the reader/viewer right into the action. Well, the Awaken Realms team went to the trouble of creating some lore!
The concept hasn’t been overdone, which is quite refreshing and it feels really well done for a story from a board game.
“The secrets of the universe seem infinitely far away, but what if many of those far-off secrets were locked away within us all?”
How could that be? Well, it’s no longer a question of whether humans are alone in the universe. In this story, Junk DNA — once a label for parts of a genome with unproven phenotypic function — does have a function, and this function is the greatest discovery in human history.
A ground-breaking discovery dubbed “The God Coordinates” was discovered inside the DNA of every living thing on planet Earth. The data pointed to an actual location within our own Milky Way Galaxy.
The news of this discovery inspired a generation of innovation.
“This purpose spurred some of the most talented people to move from work on new social apps, tech gizmos, and financial algorithms into Space Engineering.”
But still, the dream of interstellar exploration remained that…just a dream. That is until a second great discovery was made in Siberia. The wreckage of an alien spacecraft was uncovered! After years of tinkering, the alien ship’s drive was restored, though the core proved too difficult to replicate.
The world finally came together! Using the alien technology and advances in science the ISS Vanguard was created! A ship that had the task of reaching the God Coordinates and finding out what was waiting out in the vastness of space.
And that’s where our adventure begins! A truly global mission with a talented and diverse international crew on a journey to unlock the secrets of our origins and more.
